History
In the 1970s, Malabar Ottawa moved from its original location on Rideau Street where it had been located since it opened in 1966 to a quaint warehouse on Merivale Road. After 35 years at that Merivale Road location, Malabar was ready for a larger space that offered easier access and better lighting just up the street. The new location at 1610 Merivale Road has plenty of room for its huge supply of costumes and accessories, dance wear, makeup, and novelties. The rental section, thanks to Malabar's most recent expansion in 2009, now showcases a large variety of costumes and features the hand-crafted time-period costumes created by master tailor and Malabar Ltd. Owner Luigi Speca and his team in the Toronto workroom.
Community
We believe that loyal customers should be rewarded, so we created the Raise the Barre Club. For a small $5.00 donation to Roger Neilson House, customers will receive 10% off their regular-priced dance wear, shoes and tights for a year. That means each year, we offer between $10 000 and $20 000 to support the families of terminally ill children in the community.
